TASK 4: DISCUSSION SUMMARY

Hi everybody. Finally, we have ended today's discussion session quite well. Thank you for all the participation and here is a summary of our discussion today:

After reading the material provided and discussing about Development: studies in pragmatics and discourse, it can be understood that in analyzing a text, we can be done in several ways. first, through discourse in context by using the concepts of situational context, cultural and interpersonal background context, and also exophora, deixis, and intertextuality. Second, through co-text by way of grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. The last one is using speech acts. in different ways will produce different analytical results. then the method of analysis is also different because the concepts used make a difference in each analysis.

TASK 3: DISCUSSION ABOUT DEVELOPMENT

Hello everyone! Nice to see you again.

Now, we will return to the discussion with the main topic "Development: studies in pragmatics and discourse".

For this topic, there are three sub-topics that everyone should discuss:

1) Analysing the discourse in context

2) Analysing the co-text

3) Using speech acts

Please discuss in the comments column below. Express your opinion, how much do you know about these three sub-topics. It will be better if you give an example to support your knowledge and opinion. Thank you.

TASK 2: DISCUSSION - CUTTING by Grasella, Yusri, and Wine

According to the discussion regarding Cutting in yesterday’s Pragmatics course, we :

1.) Yusri Fajri Annur (A1B020065)

2.) Grasella Belta (A1B020055)

3.) Wine Githa Febiana (A1B020076)

We give the result as follows :

Video on YouTube : Edward Snowden: How Your Cell Phone Spies on You

Link :  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFns39RXPrU

The phenomenon of floating maxims in Edward Snowden's interview refers to his use of well-known sayings or principles that are detached from their original context and applied to his situation in a new way. In the interview, Snowden frequently used phrases like "the proof is in the pudding" and "you can't unring a bell" to emphasize his points about government surveillance and privacy concerns. However, he used these phrases in a way that deviated from their typical usage, leading to a sense of ambiguity or fluidity in his message. This use of floating maxims allowed Snowden to express complex ideas in a relatable way while also challenging traditional interpretations of these common sayings.

In the video, Edward Snowden uses several phrases that can be considered as floating maxims. Some examples include:

- "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" (used to criticize the argument that privacy is not important)

- "The power to surveil is the power to abuse" (used to emphasize the dangers of mass surveillance)

- "We have a right to our privacy, but more than that, we have an obligation to protect it" (used to emphasize the importance of privacy)

- "You can't give away rights, you can only give up your own" (used to criticize the argument that people willingly give up their privacy)

- "There's no such thing as a free lunch" (used to argue that the convenience of technology often comes at the cost of privacy)

These floating maxims are used to convey important ideas and arguments in a memorable and impactful way.

In the video interview with Edward Snowden, there are several instances of floating maxims, which are principles or guidelines that are not explicitly stated but are implied through the context of the conversation. One example of a floating maxim in the interview is the concept of privacy as a fundamental human right. While this is not explicitly stated, it is implied through Snowden's discussion of the importance of encryption and protecting individuals' personal data from government surveillance.

Another example of a floating maxim is the idea of government accountability and transparency. Snowden alludes to this principle when he discusses the need for government agencies to be held responsible for their actions, particularly in regards to mass surveillance programs. This principle is not explicitly stated, but is implied through Snowden's critiques of government surveillance practices.

Overall, the interview with Edward Snowden contains several instances of floating maxims that are implied through the context of the conversation. These principles, including privacy as a fundamental human right, government accountability and transparency, and individual agency and empowerment, are central to Snowden's critiques of government surveillance practices and his advocacy for greater privacy protections.

TASK 2: DISCUSSION - CUTTING by Amanda & Viere

According to the discussion regarding Cutting in today's Pragmatics course, we:

- Amanda Putri Syakirah (A1B020058)

- Viere shimponyta luri (A1B020066)

we provide the results of the discussion from the following video:

Video on youtube : real time with Bill Maher: Laura Poitras - CITIZENFOUR (HBO)

Link :  https://youtu.be/RYTUJ6st2Aw

Dialogue :

Laura Poitras : So, I think that we should we in a democracy we should have more transparency we should not be doing things that impact all of us in secret.

Bill Maher : all right well I hope you win the Oscar, stay out of jail all right let's clean up.

Analysis :

In this conversation, there is a classification of speech acts, namely representative, because A gives an explanation and the answer given by B is Expressives (Praising).

Dialogue :

Bill Maher: hey are you doing?, great to meet you I'm a big admirer

Laura Poitras : Thank you

Analysis :

These are politeness strategies (Positive), where A mentions that he is a big fan of "B" because in this situation he wants to ask a few things for the interview that is being conducted. Giving praise at the beginning is certainly part of politeness strategies

TASK 2: DISCUSSION - CUTTING by Dimas dan Estu

According to the discussion regarding Cutting in today's Pragmatics course, we:

- Dimas Ilham Trisnawan (A1B020047)
- Estu Catur Prasetyo (A1B020067)

Already found one of pragmatic phenomenon in video below;

Title : NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden: 'I don't want to live in a society that does these sort of things'
Link : https://youtu.be/0hLjuVyIIrs

Interviewer : "What is the problem you faced about surveillance?.... "

Snowden : "The problem with mass surveillance is that you're burying people under too much data....."

Analysis : Snowden use one of pragmatic phenomenon, which is implicature. The implicature here is that mass surveillance is not an effective way to prevent terrorist attacks, and that it may actually hinder law enforcement by creating a "needle in a haystack" problem.
By using implicatures, Snowden is able to communicate his message more subtly and effectively, without directly accusing the government of wrongdoing. This allows him to make his case without appearing overly confrontational or aggressive, and helps him to maintain his credibility as a whistleblower.

TASK 2: DISCUSSION - CUTTING by Dhea, Adel & Tera

According to the discussion regarding Cutting in today's Pragmatics course, we:

1) Dian Zafira Adelia (A1B020068)

2) Dhea Kamila Salsabilla (A1B020073)

3) Tera Amelia (A1B00079)

We give the result as follows:

Video on YouTube: Joe Rogan Experience #1368 - Edward Snowden

Link: https://youtu.be/efs3QRr8LWw

Interviewer: There's no such thing as off topic we could do. Okay, talk about whatever great.

Snowden: Great, okay. So, for those people first off who have no idea who the hell I am. I'm the guy who was behind the revelations global mass surveillance in 2013 ....

Analysis:

The interviewer asked Edward to change the subject to make it more interesting by using implicature (topic: shifting). However, the interviewer did not specifically mention what topics would be discussed directly. Besides that, the pragmatic phenomena that occur are directives in the words of the interviewer. Offends the maxims of relavant and quality. Relavant because what Edward said was in accordance with the implicature given by the interviewer. Meanwhile, maxim quality because Edward is honest about who he is.
